Ferrari had Hamilton P2. They got him home P6.

· Singapore Grand Prix

Verstappen had never won the Singapore Grand Prix. His sprint win on Saturday doesn't count.

Ferrari ran P2 and P3 for most of the night, which in Ferrari terms means something was about to go wrong. It did, and the clown show took its time.

The Race

Verstappen started first and by lap 16 was pulling away from Leclerc, never to be bothered again.

Behind him, Hamilton stopped early for softs, the fast tyres that don't last. That only makes sense if you stop again later, so Ferrari were betting on a safety car to make the second stop cheap. Until then he sat stuck behind his own teammate.

On lap 39 the bet came in: a Virtual Safety Car slowed everyone down, so a tyre stop cost far less time than usual. Ferrari say they called both cars in. Leclerc came in. Hamilton, on tyres already 23 laps old, drove straight past the pit entrance.

Nobody has heard that call: the broadcast only has Leclerc's. Ferrari blame a radio fault, which is the racing version of "the email must have gone to spam".

Grid Copilot alert on lap 39: Missed Virtual Safety Car Window, Hamilton stayed out while teammate Leclerc pitted under the Virtual Safety Car.

Missing the stop put him P2, for all of 6 laps.

Grid Copilot card replay, lap 46: Fresh Tyres Paid Off, Leclerc pitted under the Virtual Safety Car, dropped behind Hamilton, then came back past, drawn on the Marina Bay track.
Leclerc's stop pays off, lap 46 Back past his teammate on new tyres.

Then the tyres called it a day, and Norris closed right up behind Hamilton.

Grid Copilot alert on lap 54: Pace Dropping, Hamilton's pace is dropping, about 1.1 seconds a lap, losing time to the cars around him.
Hamilton's pace dropping, lap 54 Losing over a second a lap, with 3 cars lined up behind.

Antonelli sat behind the pair of them like a fan with a front row seat, then went past both on the same lap. Norris got Hamilton a lap later, Piastri took P5 with a lap to go, and Hamilton finished P6.

"Sorry boys, I let you down today with that strategy," he told the team. Ferrari reckon it cost them a double podium.

Elsewhere In The Grid

Russell's engine died in Malaysia, so he started near the back with a new one and climbed to P9. McLaren, a day after crashing into each other in the sprint, picked up Hamilton's leftovers: Norris P4, Piastri P5.

Antonelli now leads Russell by 102 points with 6 races left. If he wins in Austin and Russell scores 1 point or less, he is the youngest world champion in history. See you there in 2 weeks.
